Abstract

This article analyses the important role played by women in the modern energy transition towards energy sources (gas and electricity) distributed by universal and invisible networks. By considering the case of Montréal during the first half of the 20th century, it demonstrates their triple role in this process. It first presents the development of home economics as a discipline and its links with the energy industry in Montréal. It then analyses the promotion of gas and electricity by saleswomen trained in home economics and employed by the Montreal Light, Heat & Power Company. Finally, it studies the influence of home economics on standards of comfort and on energy consumption practices.
