Abstract
A study of the textile purchases of the French- and English-Canadian clients of four rural general merchants between 1830 and 1867 shows that those were keen on acquiring new materials recently put on the market, that the tastes of the two groups were not identical, and although they evolved over time, they remained different. Their textile consumption also appears to have remained fairly modest despite their liking for novelties
